STATE
COORDINATION
A state coordinator, a facilitator in each AEA, and a team
of volunteers will provide parents, individuals, and/or
agencies with a full array of direct and indirect support
such as empowerment at IEP conferences, information and
referral services, and training through seminars and
classes. Collaborative partners will be the Parent
Education Programs and the Iowa Parent Training Center. |
$180,000 |
| |
|
ANNUAL
CONFERENCE
The annual conference, the premier event of the year for
parents, agencies, professionals, and the public to learn
about learning disabilities, features prominent and
knowledgeable keynote speakers and break-out session
leaders, respected in the field of learning
disabilities—both nationally and locally. |
$20,000 |
| |
|
REGIONAL
CONFERENCES
This project will provide long distance learning to
parents, educators, the medical profession, adult services
providers, and others—information about early reading
interventions, transition best practices, model programs,
parenting, environmental issues, accommodations
interventions, and other requested topics. Nationally
known leaders will be the presenters. |
$8,000 |
| |
|
LITERACY PROJECT
This project provides funds to libraries across the state,
all AEAs, and to the Iowa Literacy Resource Center, giving
all residents of Iowa access to educational programs as
well as books and videotapes about learning disabilities.
Funds will support even more such resources. |
$18,000 |
| |
|
EDUCATION AND SUPPORT
SERVICES FOR ADULTS
Resources and curriculum will be developed to use with
selected workforce personnel, transitional coordinators,
medical personnel, employers, and educators, as well as
parents and individuals with disabilities. A guidebook
will be developed to help parents and individuals
determine the appropriate support and training services
provided at each college, university, vocational school,
and other post-secondary training option. All modules will
focus on the rights of the adult with a disability and
appropriate accommodations. |
$30,000 |
| |
|
EDUCATION & SUPPORT
SERVICES FOR K-12
An effort will be made to establish a partnership with one
or more teacher training institutions to provide a special
research-based curriculum. Teachers who successfully
complete stated competencies will achieve LDA-IA
recognition. In addition, this project will focus on staff
development for schools that fail accountability standards
noted in “No Child Left Behind,” a professionally
prescribed set of benchmarks. |
$15,000 |
| |
|
PRISON PROJECT
This pilot program will study the effectiveness of
introducing a research-based reading program to selected
persons in a prison population. The program’s goal is to
prepare prison residents to lead more productive lives and
enhance their job readiness upon release to the outside
world. This project received encouragement following a
successful LDA-IA educational technology program begun in
the year 2000 at the Iowa Correction Institution for Women
at Mitchellville. |
$40,000 |
| |
|
SCHOLARSHIP PROJECT
Ten two-year scholarships of $1000 each year will be
awarded annually to college-bound students who have
learning disabilities. Currently only three scholarships
are awarded; nearly 200 applications are received each
year and college interest continues to grow. |
$40,000 |
| |
|
DIVERSITY OUTREACH PROJECT
This project will focus on developing brochures and other
written material about learning disabilities in a variety
of diverse languages for distribution in Iowa. Parents
will be encouraged to interact with their children’s
schools and be made aware of their rights in securing
appropriate placement for their children. They will learn
of available resources to help them understand and respond
to their children’s needs. This initiative will begin with
a pilot project and will emphasize the development of
leadership within the cultures of the community. |
$8,000 |
| |
|
DOLLYWOOD FOUNDATION PARTNERSHIP PROJECT
This partnership agreement with LDA-IA will provide a book
each month to both preschool children and their parents in
a selected pilot community. Funds will be allocated ($30
per child) to serve 200 children over a two-year time
span. Our association will make efforts to establish a
relationship with selected United Way agencies to expand
this project. |
